At the heart of the complex on the Mathildenhöhe stands the Russian Chapel, a richly decorated structure that was built independently of the artists’ colony as early as the late 19th century.

One of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig’s sisters married Nicholas II, the last tsar of Russia. This sister, Alix, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, converted to the Russian Orthodox faith and thereafter went by the name Alexandra Feodorovna. A chapel was built according to Leontij Benua’s plans for the visits of the imperial family; the artistic design was created by the Symbolist painter and avant-garde artist Viktor Vasnezov.
