Die Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt ist ein Ensemble aus Hochzeitsturm, Ausstellungsgebäude, Museum Künstlerkolonie, Platanenhain und Künstlerhäusern. Sie wurde bereits im 19. Jahrhundert als Garten des großherzoglichen Hofes angelegt und war 14 Jahre lang, von 1901 bis 1914, eines der wichtigsten Zentren der modernen Kunst und Architektur in Europa und der Welt. Mit der Aufnahme in das UNESCO-Welterbe 2021 wird ihre weltweite Bedeutung als Wegbereiterin der Moderne unterstrichen.

As the central structure of the 1901 exhibition, Joseph Maria Olbrich designed the artists’ colony’s studio house at the highest point of the complex. The facade features a broad, well-proportioned building with clean lines and a richly ornamented, monumental portal. The Artists’ Colony Museum in the Ernst Ludwig House documents the history of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony (1899–1914) on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021.

The Pädagog is one of the most significant historic buildings in Darmstadt’s Old Town. The Renaissance building was constructed between 1627 and 1629 as the city’s first secondary school. Here, boys were primarily taught Latin and Greek and prepared for studies at the Hessian State University in Giessen.

The palace of the counts of Hessen-Darmstadt and the Grand Dukes of Hessen and Rhine was originally a moated castle. The building consists of wings in renaissance style and the new baroque castle, designed by Louis Remy de la Fosse. The Palace Museum is located in the bell building and the German Poland-Institute is also based in the residential palace.The palace moat is a public green space that invites visitors to linger and take a walk around the palace.

The Spanish Tower on the Rosenhoehe is a curiosity. Not just its purpose but also when it was built and by whom is still today a puzzle. No historical documents are available, leaving plenty of room for speculation. Karl Esselborn suspects that it was formerly a functional building, maybe a windmill.
