Candida Höfer is one of the world‘s most recognised German photographers. Like Andreas Gursky and Thomas Ruff, she is one of Bernd and Hilla Becher‘s students at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art and one of the most important representatives of the Düsseldorf School of Photography. She studied there from 1973 to 1982 and became known for her precisely composed photographs of the interiors of public buildings. In large format, she shows deserted halls in museums, opera houses, theatres, churches, zoological gardens and libraries, places of encounter, communication, remembrance and knowledge, but also of relaxation and recreation. The artist does not see her works as architectural photographs, but as portraits of spaces whose function and cultural significance become visible.
