Museum goes Street-Art - Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt

Friedensplatz 1, 64283 Darmstadt

With the major project “Museum goes Street Art,” the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt is continuing its exploration of graffiti as a now-recognized form of artistic expression, an exploration that began as part of the major exhibition “The Big Bang of Art: Modernity Meets Prehistory” in 2023.

The exterior façade of the Gemäldegalerie at the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt was designed in 2024 by the internationally renowned street artist MadC. This restores the museum building by Reinhold Kargel—located next to the Alfred Messel Building—to its role as a venue for art.

The idea for the design of the Painting Gallery’s facade arose in connection with a panel discussion about this exhibition, to which the artist MadC was invited. It quickly became clear that the focus would be on designing the passageway connecting the two parts of the building, which links Darmstadt’s downtown with the Herrngarten. The design will incorporate not only the building’s vertical wall surfaces but also the sidewalk and the bridge that spans a lower-lying inner courtyard. The goal is to enhance the view from both the downtown side and the Herrngarten side with abstract visual compositions whose lines converge at a single point in each perspective.

The main sponsor of the project is the Darmstadt-based science and technology company Merck. Additional sponsors of the project include the companies Caparol, Lascaux, Concrete Candy, and Molotow, which generously provided the paints for the project.

Through this project, the Hessian State Museum is repositioning itself entirely within Darmstadt’s cityscape. This is because the pedestrian passageway at the Art Gallery serves as the central axis of Darmstadt’s downtown area. Hundreds of pedestrians pass through here every day, and following this redesign, the building’s function will become more visible to them.

All passersby heading toward the Herrngarten or downtown walk through an abstract image—an immersive experience and a unique encounter with art, without actually entering the museum itself, yet accompanied by a subtle invitation to discover its universal collections.

MadC was born in Germany in the 1980s as Claudia Walde. Over the course of 25 years of constant engagement with art, she has evolved from a teenager with a spray can into one of the world’s leading street artists. Her canvases are featured in solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including at the Sinkka Museum in Finland, the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, and as part of the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia.
