In this major anniversary year for the Swiss-born artist Arnold Böcklin (1827–1901), Darmstadt marks the start of an exhibition series in the cities of Berlin, Leipzig, and Basel. As one of the outstanding painters of Symbolism, Arnold Böcklin had a decisive influence on German art in the second half of the 19th century. Fame, however, came to him only late in life.
