Removed from her time and at the same time far ahead of it, she created a crossover of cultures, combining ancient mythology, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Islam. Modernism entered the main staircase of the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt in the 1950s with four large-format tapestries. Renovation work on the museum building, which had been severely damaged in the Second World War, was almost complete in 1954 when director Erich Wiese commissioned four contemporary textile works.
