Bismarck Tower

64287 Darmstadt(167 m über NN)

At the turn of the century, Darmstadt‘s Bismarck Tower on the Dommerberg and the former Marienhöhe forest and landscape park were popular and easily accessible excursion destinations for visitors to Ludwigshöhe and its hotel-restaurant at the time.

The 25-metre-high Bismarck Tower and the adjoining fairground to the east on the Dommerberg were built in 1904-1908 on behalf of the student body of Darmstadt Technical University in memory of Otto von Bismarck.

After the Second World War, the German Weather Service set up a weather station in the Bismarck Tower, which existed until 1967. From 1967 to 1969, a US Army radio station was located on the tower. Since 1969, a civilian radio measuring station has been located on the tower.

In the 1970s, the Bundespost acquired a heritable building right from the owner of the tower, the state of Hesse. Between 2001 and 2005, the Federal Network Agency, as the successor to the Federal Post Office, carried out several renovations (including repointing and waterproofing).

In 2012, the tower was closed to visitors, and since 2014 the entire site has been cordoned off with construction fences.

It has been continuously developed and expanded since 2007. Its highlights include the partner course, the many ropeways and the particularly challenging Treeman course.A visit is also worthwhile with children. Before climbing, all active climbers receive a professional safety introduction, which is also necessary to ensure that no accidents can result from the fun.
