Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt

Friedensplatz 1, 64283 Darmstadt

The art and natural history collections of the landgraves and grand dukes form the basis of today‘s Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt.

The art and natural history collections of the landgraves and grand dukes form the basis of today‘s Hessian State Museum Darmstadt (HLMD). With collections from the fields of art, cultural and natural history, the state museum is today one of the oldest universal museums in Europe. The building was designed specifically for the various collections in close consultation with Grand Duke Ernst-Ludwig and Alfred Messel and opened in 1906.

The painting collection comprises over 440 works, including Pieter Brueghel, Peter Paul Rubens, Arnold Böcklin, August Macke and Gerhard Richter. The prints and drawings collection includes drawings by Albrecht Dürer, Michelangelo and Rembrandt van Rijn. The jewellery collection and the room ensembles by Henry van de Velde in the Art Nouveau department are world-famous.

Another highlight: the "Beuys Block", which brings together a total of 290 works by Joseph Beuys in seven rooms. The natural history collection also has a lot to offer. For example, the dioramas from 1906, which are architecturally embedded in the building and show animals in their natural environment. A highlight of the natural history collection are numerous original fossils from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Messel Pit.

There are also special themed tours and special family and children‘s tours in foreign languages. Information via the Landesmuseum (06151) 165 71 11, or overview tours via Darmstadt Marketing (06151) 134 513.

Accessibility is realised to the best of our ability in the HLMD - as far as this is possible in an old building. The building has ramps, lifts that can be used by the physically disabled and barrier-free toilets. There is also an audio guide for blind visitors, which supports the content of the six specially created tactile models.

The museum café ‘Dialog & Genuss’ in the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt invites you to take a short break during the museum‘s opening hours.
